Injectable fillers Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, Juvéderm, Artefill and Sculptra

Injectable facial fillers are an instant pick-me-up!  Injectable fillers can plump thin lips, volumize sunken or hollowed contours, create a stronger cheekbone, soften facial creases, remove wrinkles and improve the appearance of recessed scars.  Fillers can even be used to rejuvenate aging hands. Results are immediate and there is no downtime.  Dr. Poulos and her injectors utilize a numbing cream to maximize patient comfort prior to the procedure.

The longevity of a filler will depend on the product (or the combination of products) used, where the product is placed, the frequency and timing of touch-up treatments, as well as the skill of the injector herself. All of these factors play key roles in how long you will see results, which may last from a few months to a few years.

For most of the fillers, added longevity may be achieved by returning to your injector for a touch-up while some filler is still present in the treated area because the body continues to respond with its own natural collagen production around the dermal fillers.

JUVÉDERM®

The JUVÉDERM® family includes JUVÉDERM® ULTRA PLUS XC  and JUVÉDERM® ULTRA XC.  Created from hyaluronic acid - a

natural substance in the body that helps maintain skin volume and hydration - these dermal fillers provide a smooth, long-lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.

JUVÉDERM® is the first smooth consistency gel formulation and only hyaluronic acid dermal filler approved by the FDA to last up to one year from initial treatment.

Restylane®

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane, Restylane-L®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®. Also made from hyaluronic acid, these products can be used individually to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

Restylane is also FDA approved for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years, and is uniquely formulated to give your lips fullness and definition.

Perlane®

Perlane is made by the same company (and from the same hyaluronic acid) as Restylane. The difference is that the gel particles are larger and, therefore, Perlane is more effective at filling in deeper folds and achieving increases in facial fullness.

RADIESSE®

Rather than hyaluronic acid, Radiesse is made from calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. Radiesse provides both immediate and extended results because it stimulates production of collagen and encourages tissue regeneration. These calcium based microspheres are similar to minerals that are found naturally in your body so allergy testing is not required. It is most commonly used for the smoothing of folds and lines, for cheek augmentation, and to plump up sunken areas below the eyes.

Artefill®

Artefill is the first and only non-reabsorbable dermal filler to be approved by the FDA. Its claim to fame is that it provides a permanent support structure for lasting wrinkle correction, which means that its effects are both immediate and long-term. Artefill is made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres, a material that has been used for years in surgical implants. However, since it is not a natural substance, there is a risk of allergic reaction. Because the results are considered to be permanent, physicians using Artefill generally prefer to under-fill on the first treatment, adding more at a subsequent appointment, if needed. Generally, full results are seen within six months of the procedure.

Sculptra Aesthetic®

Sculptra is generally used as a treatment for facial lipoatrophy, the loss of fat beneath the skin that sometimes causes sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes. The main component of Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a bio-compatible substance that does not cause damage to surrounding tissues. Unlike other dermal fillers, Sculptra does not produce immediate results. It works by stimulating collagen production, so results appear gradually over a period of a few months. Three to five treatments are usually required, and results can last up to two years or more.
