Are Facelift Scars Noticeable?
During a facelift, an incision is created at the hairline and continues around the ears, ending at the lower scalp. Excess skin is trimmed and the incision is closed with sutures. Unfortunately, this leaves a scar but fortunately, a skilled plastic surgeon can place the incisions so that scarring is undetectable.
Below Dr. Cynthia Poulos of Classique Medical Spa explains how this is accomplished and what you can do to ensure that you minimize the appearance of scars.
Minimizing Facelift Scarring
Ideally, facelift scars are not noticeable once healing is complete. The plastic surgeon helps minimize facelift scarring by creating the incisions in areas where detecting scars is difficult, if not impossible. Probably the area most vulnerable to facelift scarring is in front of the ear. Dr. Poulos can hide the incision behind the ear and within the ear canal to make any scarring almost invisible.
Caring for Scars After Surgery
After surgery, each patient receives instructions on caring for the incisions to keep scarring at bay. Following these instructions is essential to achieving the best results. Keep the incisions moist by applying ointment regularly. This helps speed up the healing process. After the sutures are removed, approximately one week post-surgery, massage the incisions gently several times daily. This increases blood flow to the area and helps prevent scar tissue buildup. However, do not attempt to massage your scars while the incision is fresh and sutures are present.
Stay out of the sun. The last thing you want is to have the scar tissue turn darker than the surrounding tissue after tanning or burning, which can prove permanent. When cleaning your face, use a gentle cleanser and do not scrub near the incisions. Vitamin E, taken orally, can support healing from the inside out and may also aid in scar prevention when applied topically.
When it comes to facelifts and other plastic surgery, experience counts. That experience includes techniques perfected to minimize any scarring. Dr. Poulos has over 20 years’ experience in plastic and reconstructive surgery and uses many techniques to ensure scarring is virtually unnoticeable once the face has fully healed. She will discuss scar minimization and develop a plan for you based on your own individual factors.
