What is a breast reduction?

Breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) removes fat, glandular tissue, and excessive skin, resulting in smaller, lighter and firmer breasts that are better-shaped in proportion to the rest of the body. Dr. Poulos is a breast surgery veteran and has performed hundreds of breast reduction procedures.  Her expertise allows her to utilize the latest surgical techniques, including limited incision, the LeJour method, and the use of liposculpture for artistic shaping of the breast.

Her expertise allows her to utilize the latest surgical techniques, including limited incision, the LeJour method, and the use of liposculpture for artistic shaping of the breast. Because of Dr. Poulos’ advanced experience and skill, the use of drains is unnecessary for most patients.

Advantages to her no-drain technique include more freedom of movement for the patient post-operatively, far less risk of infection, and no scarring. Depending upon your age and anatomy, she may utilize one or a combination of these techniques to achieve optimal results.

What are the benefits of breast reduction?

  • Improved stamina and physical range of
    motion
  • Improved fit in clothing and swimwear
  • Reduction in chaffing and irritation
  • Reduction in shoulder, back and neck pain
  • Boost in self-confidence
  • A more youthful, aesthetically pleasing physique

What can I expect from recovery?

Most patients plan to take one to two weeks away from work and other obligations to recover following breast reduction surgery. For the first few days, you will need help completing your daily activities. Gradually, you may ease back into your normal routine, although actions such as lifting your arms above your head, heavy lifting, or bending over should be restricted. Strenuous exercise must be avoided for six weeks.

The amount of tissue removed and the length of incisions can affect the healing time. The breasts may not settle into their final shape, size, and position for up to six months, although the initial results of the procedure will be apparent within a week or two. Following breast reduction, the breasts will appear smaller, lighter, and less droopy than before surgery. However, weight gain, pregnancy, and aging can cause further changes in the size or appearance of the breasts.

Cynthia M. Poulos MD

I recently had a breast reduction, and can't speak highly enough about Dr. Poulos and her staff. From start to finish I felt comfortable with the process and I am so happy with the results. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. The surgery and recovery were both quick and easy! The office is clean and beautiful, easy to get to and hours are convenient. Will absolutely go back, and highly recommend!
