Are you "too old" for a tummy tuck?

I recently saw a 65-year-old woman in consultation for a tummy tuck here at my Northborough plastic surgery office. She was excited about the potential of eliminating most, if not all, of the stretch marks from previous pregnancies, and tightening up her abdomen so that her clothing fit well. We reviewed the options, discussed the procedure, including any potential risks and complications, and she seemed very eager to proceed. However, I was surprised when she asked me if she was “too old” for the procedure!

Truth is, no healthy patient is “too old” to look and feel better about themselves! So long as there are no health issues, such as high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease that may be negatively impacted with a cosmetic surgery procedure, there’s no reason to avoid self-improvement!

How many of us fall into the trap of thinking we’re “too old” to make changes, whether those are physical, emotional, financial or other changes? Many people take up a new hobby, a new sport, move to a new part of the country, learn a new language and undergo other life-changing events in their 60s, 70s and beyond.

When you think about undergoing a plastic surgery procedure, I hope you won’t allow out-dated beliefs about aging to get in your way. While I’m the last person to suggest something that a patient might not want, I’m the first person to say that if you have a personal goal for self-improvement, unless your health forbids it, you should move forward.
