What is dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion helps to “refinish” the skin’s top layers through a method of controlled skin removal. The treatments soften the sharp edges of surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother appearance.

Dermabrasion is most often used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by accidents or previous surgery, or to smooth out fine facial wrinkles. The vertical “smoker’s” lines around the mouth are a very common area to receive this treatment.

It’s also sometimes used to remove the pre-cancerous growths called keratoses. Some types of acne scarring respond well to dermabrasion.

Dermabrasion can be used alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as facelift, scar removal or revision, or chemical peel. Dermabrasion may be performed in our in-office surgical suite.

What is the difference between dermabrasion and microdermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a far different procedure than microdermabrasion, which is a spa exfoliating treatment. Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure that requires a significant recovery period but, once you have healed, it delivers a dramatically-improved skin texture.

What are the benefits of dermabrasion?

  • Improves the texture of dull skin
  • Treats clogged, enlarged pores
  • Smooths away complexion flaws
  • Lessons the appearance of facial scarring
  • Effective for all skin types
  • Boosts satisfaction with one’s appearance
  • A more youthful, inviting complexion
  • Increased absorption of serums and skincare products
  • Minimal downtime
  • See results right away
  • No chemicals
  • Reduced wrinkles and fine lines

Who makes a good candidate for dermabrasion in Worcester?

Not everyone is a candidate for dermabrasion. If, after an injury, your skin tends to develop raised (keloid) scars or form pale or dark spots (hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation, respectively), dermabrasion is contraindicated. Persons with very thin skin or a history of certain viral diseases (such as oral herpes) are also dissuaded from the procedure

What will my recovery be like?

After dermabrasion, patients may experience redness, tenderness, swelling or difficulty talking and eating. These are normal responses to the procedure, and will go away within about a week. Dr. Poulos will make sure you receive the proper pain medications as well as a thorough aftercare plan. Be sure to avoid direct contact with the sun as your skin heals.
