How Does Profound Radiofrequency Treatment Work?

When we are young, our bodies naturally produce collagen and elastin, two fibers that keep our skin looking tight and firm. We also produce hyaluronic acid, a substance that helps retain water and create a plumping, moist effect in the skin. Starting in our mid-20s, our natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid starts to break down and our supply of these substances dwindles. As a result, wrinkles and other problems start to become more noticeable.

The Profound system minimizes the appearance of these flaws and helps to create smoother, tighter and more youthful-looking skin without surgery. Using tiny needles that deliver radiofrequency energy into the deeper layers of the skin, Profound creates tiny thermal injuries in the dermis. These thermal injuries trigger the body’s wound healing response as well as the formation of new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

In the weeks and months following Profound treatment, the target area looks smoother, tighter and more youthful. Commonly used along the chin and jawline, Profound can help create greater sharpness and definition in the lower face. The radiofrequency treatment can also be used to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Treatment Details

Profound treatment is performed with local anesthesia and in some cases, oral sedation. The total treatment time is approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

During treatment, the provider passes the Profound handpiece underneath the skin in the target area of the face and/or neck. Tiny needles on the handpiece pinpoint where the radiofrequency energy is delivered at a very precise depth. Radiofrequency heats the skin, causing collagen and elastin levels to climb.

What Happens After Treatment?

After a treatment session, you may have mild swelling, bruising or tenderness at the injection site, but you can resume most of your normal activities almost immediately. Normally one or two treatment sessions are recommended for optimal results.

Dr. Poulos can work with you to identify your specific needs and determine how many treatments you will need to achieve your goals. You may see visible improvement in as little as two weeks with results steadily improving for about six months.
