The Pros & Cons of Liposuction and Nonsurgical Fat Reduction

Posted on July 21, 2017 by Cynthia M. Poulos, M.D.

A common concern for most cosmetic surgery patients is diet and exercise-resistant pockets of fat. These pockets of fat are incredibly difficult to get rid of without the assistance of a body sculpting procedure of some time. The most commonly performed of these body sculpting procedures is liposuction.

Liposuction can safely remove fat effectively, but in recent years other nonsurgical and minimally invasions alternatives to liposuction have been growing in popularity. These body contouring procedures don’t usually require any incisions or anesthesia and they more often than not have less downtime.

With these minimally invasion procedures producing effective results what is the point of liposuction?

Well both liposuction and the noninvasive alternatives have their pros and cons and to make it easier for you to decide which is better for you, we are going to list those here.

How invasive are the procedures?

Liposuction aggressively targets fat and removes it effectively, but the procedure is invasive and will leave you with soreness, bruising and potential swelling for up to 10 years following the procedure.

The other noninvasive body sculpting options are generally a very gentle experience with only minimal levels of discomfort during and after the procedure.

What results can I expect?

Liposuction will offer a more dramatic amount of fat loss than the other invasive options, but it can take up to one year before you see the final results of your liposuction procedure.

The noninvasive body sculpting options will give you results more quickly, typically within weeks of the procedure. The results from these types of procedures will not however, be as dramatic as those following a liposuction procedure.

How long is the downtime following the procedure?

Liposuction does require patients to lay low for a few days following the procedure while your body heals. After several days you should be able to resume daily activities, but you still need to exercise caution when doing strenuous physical activity for some time after the procedure.

With the other noninvasive body sculpting options, you don’t have such a lengthy healing period. In fact, you should be able to resume your normal activities almost immediately following the procedure. You might encounter some residual soreness immediately after the procedure though.
