What your plastic surgeon should know about liposuction

Posted on April 18, 2017 by Cynthia M. Poulos, M.D.

Getting liposuction or a tummy tuck for a trimmer figure is a good idea if you are unable to shed off stubborn pounds or need to alleviate swelling post surgery. However, an experienced plastic surgeon should inform you about the procedure from start to finish and what to expect before, during and after it. The following are some facts that he/she should know:

Your stomach will not get as flat as you might expect

Contrary to popular belief, liposuction does not necessarily result in a completely fat stomach. A pregnancy and weight gain in general does more than deposit fat around the abdomen – it stretches the muscles and skin there as well, which this procedure is not designed to rectify. If you want a flat stomach and a trimmer abdomen, then a tummy tuck or rhinoplasty should be done rather than liposuction.

Your limbs will not magically look slimmer

Even by using radio frequncy, you may not be able to get daintier arms so expecting slimmer arms right off the bat may end in disappointment. What liposuction does is reduce the fat on your arm by about 30% and the rest is up to you and your weight loss regime. This will be enough to make your arms fit slimmer sleeves and reduce the bulge below your arms significantly.

Recovery can take a few months

Just like any surgical procedure, you cannot return to your daily life actively right after a liposuction procedure. Depending on the extent of the surgery your scars might take a couple of months to heal completely and you might be prescribed bed rest for a month at least to allow the skin to heal. You may also need to wear a compression garment for at least 2 days straight to ensure the stitches are not aggravated.  You may also feel numbness in the treated areas for a few days as ruptured tissue heals which can be alleviated with a warm compress.

These are just some of the facts that a professional plastic surgeon should know about liposuction post and pre surgery.
