What is a deep chemical peel?

A deep chemical peel is a surgical procedure to resurface scarred, wrinkled, or discolored skin. The peel utilizes a chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers. Dr. Poulos selects the appropriate peeling agent and depth of peel to achieve the desired results. Primarily utilized on the face, chemical peels can also be used to improve skin texture on the neck, chest, and hands.

What are the benefits?

  • Clearer, healthier skin
  • Improved skin texture and skin tone
  • Improved sense of confidence in one’s appearance
  • Refreshed, rejuvenated feeling

What are the different types of peels?

Light peelsLight chemical peels are for gentle exfoliation of the skin’s more superficial layers. They are typically made with alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) or salicylic acid.

Medium peels – Medium peels offer more thorough exfoliation, penetrating the deeper skin layers to help remove debris and damage below the surface. They are usually made using trichloroacetic or glycolic acid.

Deep peels – This type of peel has the longest recovery period, but can be instrumental in revitalizing a complexion that has become dull and depleted. A deep peel is made using phenol or trichloroacetic acid, and can treat acne scarring, melasma, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and fine lines, and many other chronic skin problems.

What will my recovery be like?

Depending on the depth of your chemical peel in Worcester, you can expect anywhere from a 2-day to 6-week recovery time. Your skin may look slightly sunburned with a mild peel, or may crust with a moderate to deep peel.

Who makes a good candidate for a deep chemical peel?

Dr. Poulos will evaluate your skin to determine the best type of chemical peel for your complexion. Those suffering from sun spots, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, enlarged pores, wrinkles and fine lines, flaky skin and facial scarring can all find relief with personalized chemical peels. You will be asked to stop smoking several weeks before your treatment, and to discontinue any current acne medications. Those with active skin infections will not make good candidates for this treatment.
