What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia, roughly meaning “woman-like breasts,” is the non-cancerous growth of tissue and fat in the male chest, causing an unwanted feminine appearance. This condition can cause self-consciousness and social inhibition, especially in settings where it is the norm to go shirtless, such as at the beach, in the locker room, or in the bedroom.  Because gynecomastia is resistant to dieting and exercise, a surgical intervention may be the only true solution for contouring the chest and achieving a more traditionally masculine aesthetic.

What causes gynecomastia?

There are many causes of gynecomastia, including genetics, hormonal changes, certain medications, and obesity. It can present itself in different ways, but it typically occurs in both breasts. In some cases, it can appear unilaterally, or in only one breast. There may be localized excess fat, glandular tissue, or breast skin causing gynecomastia. The weight of the excess tissue can cause the skin and areola to sag and stretch, emphasizing the appearance of the breasts. Luckily, this condition is easily addressed with a basic procedure.

What can I expect from the surgery?

The treatment of gynecomastia, also called reduction mammaplasty or male breast reduction surgery, involves a relatively simple surgery to remove fat and (if needed) excess tissue and skin. Some patients may require only liposuction to treat gynecomastia. Others may need excision of tissue and skin. In some cases, both techniques may be used. The areola may need to be repositioned. The chest area is then flattened and contoured.

Am I a good candidate for this surgery?

Ideal candidates for male breast reduction are in good physical health with no life-threatening medical conditions. The patient should be a non-smoker and at a stable, relatively healthy weight.

The emotional state of a patient is essential as well. It is important to have a positive outlook, yet realistic expectations about the results of the surgery.

Before & After

What will recovery entail?

Take care to follow your post-op instructions carefully. Your incisions will be bandaged, and you may need to wear a compression band to minimize swelling. A tube may be inserted temporarily into the chest to drain excess blood and fluid. Some permanent scarring is likely to be a result of this procedure, but it will fade over time. The results of the surgery are long-lasting, but adolescents who undergo the procedure may need a secondary procedure later in life.
