What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, reduces loose excess skin on the abdomen and, when paired with liposuction, destroys fatty deposits for a more contoured silhouette. The procedure also repairs weakened or damaged muscles. If you exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet but still struggle with a flabby abdomen, you may be an appropriate candidate for a tummy tuck in Framingham.

Dr. Poulos will meet with you to better understand your specific body contouring needs and determine whether you are a good candidate for this popular body sculpting procedure. Depending on your anatomy and aesthetic goals, she may recommend combining a tummy tuck with another body contouring procedure to achieve optimal results.

Tummy Tuck Candidates

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is in good shape and at a stable weight but is frustrated by loose, fatty abdominal skin that does not respond to dieting and exercise. Potential patients should be emotionally and physically healthy with realistic expectations for what their surgery can achieve.

If your area of concern is limited to the lower abdomen, you may be a better candidate for a mini tummy tuck. A mini tummy tuck requires one incision placed low on the stomach, typically shorter than the incision used for a traditional tummy tuck. With a mini tummy tuck, Dr. Poulos trims excess skin on the lower abdomen and tightens the underlying muscles for a flatter contour.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

The most significant benefit of a tummy tuck would be the increased mobility and stamina resulting from the procedure. Other benefits include:

  • More attractive abdominal appearance
  • Improved silhouette
  • More confidence having a photo taken
  • Increased wardrobe choices

Tummy Tuck Procedure and Recovery

A traditional tummy tuck is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Dr. Poulos creates a horizontal incision from hip to hip and may create a second incision around the navel if it is necessary to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen. Dr. Poulos removes skin and fat through these incisions before suturing the abdominal muscles. Once finished, she will close the incisions with sutures.

After your abdominoplasty in Framingham, you must avoid vigorous activity for up to four weeks to give your stomach muscles time to heal correctly. Soreness and tenderness are expected and may last up to one week, but you can reasonably control these symptoms with oral pain medications dispensed by Dr. Poulos. You may need to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and increase circulation.
